String Works Series| Danish String Quartet, February 11

Santa Fe Pro Musica continues its String Works Series on Sunday, February 11 at 3pm with the Danish String Quartet, “one of the best quartets before the public today” (Washington Post). This quartet, comprised of three Danes and one Norwegian, have come together like modern Vikings and captivated the world, not through pillage and plunder, but through “their nimble charisma” (The Guardian), “their constant vitality and flow” (Gramophone), and their “radiant warmth and humanity” (Boston Classical Review).

• How do they choose their repertoire? Mr. Øland answers, “We sit down with a lot of beer and a list.” Furthermore, their annual festival in Copenhagen (DSQ-Musikfest) has its own line of craft beer.

• About their performance philosophy, Mr. Sørensen says that they try to have as much freedom as possible, but they can’t be free if they haven’t prepared well on a technical level.

• Known for their intensely joyful energy, Mr. Nørgaard remarks that “you can have fun and be very serious at the same time.”

• The two violinists and the violist met when they were children at a summer music camp in Denmark. Their Norwegian cellist joined them in 2008.

• Their debut as a quartet was at the 2002 Copenhagen Summer Festival.

• From 2013-2015 they were artists for Lincoln Center CMS Two and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists.
