String Works Series I
Meet the Pacifica String Quartet
On Sunday, January 12, in St. Francis Auditorium, Pro Musica presents the first concert of their String Works Series featuring the award-winning Pacifica String Quartet. Formed in 1994, this quartet won the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award, followed by Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award (2002) which included an appointment to Lincoln Center’s The Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two). In 2006 they won an Avery Fisher Career Grant and were featured on the cover of Gramophone Magazine. In 2008 they received a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance (Elliott Carter, String Quartets No. 1 and No. 5, on the Naxos label). In 2009 they were named “Ensemble of the Year” by Musical America. And in 2017 they were appointed to lead the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival. They were previously Quartet-in-Residence with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, a position they currently hold at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where they are also full-time faculty members.
In addition to this impressive array of awards and achievements, the Pacifica String Quartet is devoted to performing complete cycles of a composer’s string quartets, including all five quartets by the American composer Elliott Carter (1908-2012), Mendelssohn’s six quartets, Beethoven’s 16 quartets and Shostakovich’s 15 quartets. Critics have described these concerts as “brilliant,” “astonishing,” and “nothing short of phenomenal” (Daily Telegraph, London).
WATCH the Pacifica String Quartet play the first movement from Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 18, No. 6 (5:03).
